In one of our last jobs of 2019 we were called, as a matter of urgency, to a car park in Central London but this time for something completely new to us as an anti slip company. The client had been having slip issues with cyclists.

At 4Earth Solutions we visit many different environments and encounter many different types of floor. Factories are one of the environments we are called to all of the time. We have visited and worked in everywhere from manufacturing to food factories, each one has its own issues.

It is a pretty well-known fact that in today’s society there are hundreds, if not thousands, of ambulance-chasing lawyers. They are, to the last man and woman, only too delighted to provide their services to people who have suffered injury on a “no win, no fee” basis.

It is a sad fact of life in the 21st century that many people will look for any excuse that they can to extract money from others. This includes ambulance-chasing lawyers who are only too glad to provide their services for free to people who have suffered an injury as a result of negligence on the part of someone else, even if the “someone else” didn’t realise they could be accused of negligence.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSW Act) requires employers to ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone who may be affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practicable. This includes taking steps to control slip and trip risks. Slips, trips, and falls are the single biggest cause of accidents in the workplace and can result in huge claims for damages.

According to the HSE, the most common forms of serious injury, to both employees and members of the public, are slips, trips, and falls. Unfortunately, if you run a business you can be in the direct firing line of one of the many solicitors in this country who are only too happy to be approached by someone who has been so injured and take up their case on a “no win, no fee” basis, knowing full well that they almost always win. They usually charge 25% of all damages won.

Floors come in a myriad of different choices, but tile is always popular. Unlike hardwood flooring, tile floors are durable, easy to install, are waterproof, and there is an almost endless choice of patterns and designs. Most importantly, they do not need anywhere near as much maintenance as carpet does. However, like all floors, they do need regular cleaning in order to keep them looking their best.

If you operate any sort of business, the law requires that you do certain things. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to assess risks (including slip and trip risks) and, where necessary, take action to address them. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 require floors to be suitable, in good condition and free from obstructions. People should be able to move around safely.

Slips and falls are the major cause of serious accidents in the workplace, and they can result in claims for damages that run into the hundreds of thousands. Sometimes they only cause some minor bruising, but they can cause spinal injuries, broken legs and arms, and can on occasion be fatal.

4Earth Solutions is a specialist in floor safety. Many businesses are unaware that the major cause of accidents in the workplace is slips, trips, and falls, and many of these are the result of a floor surface which, while it may be regularly cleaned, is actually dangerous.
